Hey, this is Seth Ben-Ezra, designer of Dirty Secrets. I wanted to thank the two of you for discussing my game.
My wife did the art direction for the book, and we agreed that, since the game was poking at racial issues, it was vitally important that we select the various photographs with care. I’m glad that this came across well.
And, regarding the Latino “gangster” couple, we actually both think that they’re kind of cute. Reminds us a bit of us, actually. (I’m really tall, and my wife is really short.) I doubt that came across quite as well, but even in that picture, we connected with the basic humanity of the people in the picture.
If possible, I’d appreciate it if you could pass this comment on to Chris. I’ve wanted to contact him personally but didn’t have any reliable contact information. Thanks!

Hey Seth,
Yeah, it’s the fact that they came across as “couple” more than gangster which I thought was great. There’s also this way in which you don’t see images of POC couples in love very often in the media.

Excellent show, Sam, and an excellent topic to discuss, just perfect for your show. I have to critique you a bit, though, in that it felt like you were floundering a couple of times during the show. A bit tighter editing would have gotten rid of that impression. I also think that, as good a conversation as it was, there were a couple of times when issues were not better explored (though of course, I cannot recall any to mind now). I think this would be a good topic to come back to, perhaps even with members of other minorities, such as Hispanics or Asians, Jews or Muslims, or gays. We have had a big surge of members of all these groups doing active work in gaming, whether designing or as part of a greater team, and it would be nice to look at the issue in a borader context.
Take care,
